I received this product in exchange for a review, but the opinions expressed here are my own. Connor loves experiments, specifically Chemistry experiments. I spend a great deal of time (long nights on Pinterest with a strong cup of coffee) trying to find age appropriate experiments that are safe to do at home. After I find something that is promising I usually have to order the supplies we need, and pull everything together. It can be quite labor intensive. To save on time I've been browsing the internet for "Science Subscription Boxes" that send out experiments. I found quite a few fun looking Science Subscriptions, but very few that were age appropriate for my Middle Schooler-until I ran across MEL Science! When our box arrived we all gathered around the Table. Our Sample included the Starter Kit (which came with 2 Chemistry sets) and 3 additional Chemistry Sets. We were impressed with the materials in the Starter Set- they are of very high quality. Here is an image from the MEL Science Website that shows the inside of the starter kit. MEL Science has 38 different Chemistry Sets. Each set contains 2-3 separate experiments. We decided to try our hand at the Chemistry Of Monsters set. This particular kit contains two experiments: A Sugar Snake, and a Burning Sugar experiment. Each of these kits contains written directions, supplies (except for a few common household ones) and information cards. I appreciate that these kits take different types of "Learners" into consideration. In addition you can also find Step-by-Step directions (with images), Safety Info, Disposal information, Information about the Reagents, FAQ's and a step by step video on-line for each experiment. Connor decided to try out the "Sugar Snake" experiment with a little help from Dad. After a little bit of waiting-the "snake" finally appeared! The burning sugar experiment was the next one Connor completed. He made several attempts to try and burn the sugar-to no avail. Next he coated the sugar cube with ash. After he coated it with ash, he was successful in getting it to melt. You can see the ash covered sugar cube melted on top of a non-coated one below. There are more than enough supplies to repeat these experiments. Each month includes 3 different Chemistry sets with 2-3 different experiments in each one. There are plenty of experiments to keep you busy throughout the month.
The Costs: There is a One Time Charge which include the Starter Kit, a Reagent Kit, and your first 2 Chemistry kits for $73.80. After that you will receive 3 new Chemistry kits for $35.85/month ($11.95/kit). You can cancel at any time and re-start without being billed for the starter kit again. The experiments are well organized, easy to set up and complete. They are just as much fun for adults as the kids-Mr. S had a blast! If I were to make a suggestion it would be allow customers the opportunity to purchase the kits individually. The best part was the amount of planning time this saved me. This Chemistry Set from MEL Science gets a thumbs up from this homeschooling Mom! |
